Families Talk Housing in Perth

Families in Perth County are eager to discuss housing options for their loved one with a disability. In particular, families are interested in arrangements that enable their loved one to live in their community alongside their neighbours and in less congregated settings. The network planned some events to bring families together to discuss and learn from each other. There were two key events hosted this fall.

First, we hosted two events that invited others to join the network for coffee and a chat. One meet up was located in Stratford and one in Listowel on a Saturday morning. Families who joined us said it was really nice to be able to meet locally and on a day and at a time that they could bring a friend or attend with their partner.

At the event, families learned about different types of housing models that used creative support arrangements to build a home. These approaches are alternatives to group living and take an individualized approach. Families watched videos of other families telling their planning journey and stories of their loved ones lives. These were stories from across Canada and it was exciting for families to hear from other families who are also seeking more individualized housing options. The network had facilitators from Facile Futures attend to help facilitate conversation and answer questions for families regarding the planning process.

Next we hosted a family-led storytelling event followed by an in-person and virtual discussion. Families who gathered in person met in Mitchell ON. Families from across Perth joined in person and online to learn about what’s happening right here in our community. Three families were featured in the webinar and shared their journeys to implementing an individualized housing plan. Families were different ages and all at different stages of the planning process. Of course, everyone was using a variety of resources at their disposal.

Overall the turnout and response from families from all events was enthusiastic!

Based on feedback we received, we know families are eager to meet in-person and online more often to discuss plans and learn from each other. We also know families are eager to learn about tools and mechanisms for reinforcing their plans and protecting their loved ones wishes.

The Network’s steering committee is currently planning a webinar that will provide families with an introduction to Microboards. This webinar will air in March.
