Facile Futures has teamed up with Campbell’s Creations — a local Mother-Daughter owned business in Stratford, Ont. — to offer hand-made keepsake tokens for this Mother’s Day!
These laser-cut, wooden tokens take the shape of a heart with a bow, and are designed to honour the strengths and gifts of Mothers in our community who provide love and care. The idea behind these tokens was inspired by Bruce Anderson and the Core Gifts Institute’s idea of Core Gifts and celebrating the unique gifts that exist in every individual.
Each token comes with a customizable backing card, which highlights the value of the individual gifts of the Mothers in your life.
Honouring the Historical Role of Parents in the Inclusion Movement
Historically, parent networks began to grow during the 1930s and 1960s, and by the 1970s, these networks had become national organizations. Some examples of these include March of Dimes, Easter Seals and Associations for Community Living. These organizations still exist today, and were founded by families who wanted to improve the quality of life and the personal rights of people who have a disability and their families.
There are many examples of the extraordinary ways that parents and caregivers ‘marched’, alongside their loved ones, for equality in Canada’s history. Women, and in particular mothers, have played a very important role within the parent movement. Women who have a child with a disability have organized themselves for decades. During the 1950s, their ‘accidental’ roles as advocates, and their cause gained momentum. Their meetings would happen around kitchen tables, and they protested in their neighbourhoods and schools. They lobbied governments and went to court to defend their children’s rights (Truths of Institutionalization, 2026).
Today, parents continue to advocate, organize and hold a strong vision for inclusion and equal rights for their loved ones with a disability.
What Your Donation Achieves
Planning is something we all do, especially when making important life decisions.
Parents and caregivers often take on the important role of helping their loved one with a disability to make informed choices, navigate services, and ensure their loved one’s voice is heard and respected.
Facilitators play an important role in helping people to be understood and heard, so that their wishes and desires are respected and honored. They also help caregivers to navigate complicated systems, advocate for much needed supports, and plan for the future when they are no longer able to take on this important role.
However, planning and facilitation is an underfunded resource in Ontario, and that means cost has become a barrier for some families who would truly benefit from the support of a facilitator, and the services Facile Futures provides. That’s where you come in!
With each purchase, you’re supporting Facile Futures to improve access to planning services and supports. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly toward supporting access to services for parents, caregivers and family networks who are waiting for our support.
Our organization believes that by building on people’s dreams, strengths, and gifts, we can help everyone live a good life rooted in belonging and community. You can be part of that journey, too, by purchasing a token this Mother’s Day and recognizing the important role parents play.
